Description
Kanamycin sulfate is a water-soluble, broad-spectrum antibiotic obtained from soil bacterium Streptomyces kanamyceticus. It is an aminoglycoside antibiotic effective against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria and mycoplasma. It binds to the 70S ribosomal subunit, inhibits translocation, and elicits miscoding.
- Convenient 1 mL vial ready to use.
Applications
Kanamycin ready-made 50 mg/mL solution acts by binding to the 70S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting translocation and eliciting miscoding. Aminoglycoside-modifying enzymes (including acetyltransferase, phosphotransferase, nucleotidyltransferase) can alter this antibiotic, preventing its interaction with ribosomes.
Kanamycin is used in Molecular Biology as a selective agent most commonly to isolate bacteria that have taken up genes coupled to a gene coding for kanamycin resistance.
